Yesterday, Delegate Ibraheem S. Samirah (D-86) endured Islamophobic attacks from the Virginia Republican Party after his critique of President Trump’s incitement of violence against Representiative Ilhan Omar.
The official Virginia GOP account posted a thread on Twitter yesterday including: “Here’s a fun game. Will @IbraheemSamirah denounce Louis Farrakhan? Hamas? The suicide attacks of Intifada?” This was in response to Delegate Samirah standing up to the President’s continued attacks against the American Muslim community.
The GOP’s tweet was immediately met with condemnation, and the Virginia Democratic Party issued an online statement: “This is how the Republican Party of Virginia treats our Commonwealth’s first Palestinian-American state legislator. We have come so far, but yet have so very far to go. Truly sad.”
“Thanks to the Virginia Republican Party’s smears since January, I get death threats just for being an outspoken American Muslim. They want to paint Muslims as scary and un-American because they can’t stand to see a young Muslim fighting for the people in the House of Delegates,” said Delegate Samirah.
Senator Jennifer Boysko (D-33), Delegate Carter Lee (D-50), the Fairfax County NAACP and other community groups and candidates for office have issued their own online statements of support for Delegate Samirah condemning the GOP’s rhetoric as dangerous and harmful.
